In the Republic, the Control of Dogs Acts require a dog to be under effectual control in a public place, and restricted breeds must be muzzled and led on a short strong lead by someone over 16. Individual councils add their own on-leash zones, usually around playgrounds, pitches and bathing beaches in summer.
